Construction on Carolina Harbor Waterpark is now underway. Over the next few months, Boomerang Bay will undergo a massive transformation in what will be the largest waterpark expansion in Carowinds history. Once the construction is completed in the spring of 2016, Carolina Harbor will double the number of current water slides and will become the largest waterpark in the Carolinas.

The construction of Carolina Harbor is the latest phase in a $50-million plus, multi-year expansion at Carowinds, which was kicked off last year with the world’s tallest and fastest giga-coaster, Fury 325 .

In addition to the new name and coastal Carolina theme, Carolina Harbor will bring a variety of new and enhanced experiences for families and thrill seekers alike, including:

  • Blackbeard’s Revenge - A six-story slide complex with a total of six slides.
  • Seaside Slashworks - A multi-level children’s water spray ground with over 80 elements.
  • Kiddy Hawk Cove and Myrtle Turtle Beach - Two new children areas with several interactive elements.
  • Surf Club Harbor - A state-of-the-art 27,000 square-foot wave pool.
  • New Waterpark Entrance
  • New Restaurants
  • Sand Volleyball Courts
  • Additional Luxury Cabanas and Seating
  • Upgraded Facilities

All current Boomerang Bay attractions will take on a new life with Carolina coastal themes and new vibrant colors.

New Exit on Pleasant Road

Due to the size of the expansion, construction crews are already hard at work to ensure Carolina Harbor is ready for our guests in the spring of 2016. Every historic expansion must start somewhere, and ours started with a new four-lane exit onto Pleasant Road.

In addition to our new waterpark entrance, which will provide guests direct and convenient entry, we are also building a four-lane exit to improve traffic flow out of the park. Guests will enter the park as they currently do via Avenue of the Carolinas, but can now exit onto Pleasant Road, which is already equipped with a four-way stop and traffic lights. This gives our guest another option for exiting the park and gives them easy access to Carowinds Boulevard, Interstate 77 and other connecting roads. View on Google Maps.

We are also busy preparing land for new construction. In the next couple of weeks, we will be laying the foundation for Blackbeard’s Revenge and digging the layout for the Surf Club Harbor wave pool.

Supporting Our Local Workforce

Charlotte-based Southside Contractors, Inc. will be serving as our general contractors, overseeing the majority of the construction. They will also be using local subcontractors for specialized jobs throughout the expansion.

Be sure to follow our Carolina Harbor Construction Blog regularly as we provide regular updates of our progress with our director of maintenance, Steve Jackson; manager of rides maintenance, Bob Paytosh; manager of construction and facilities, Bob Gesell; and Phillip Allen, manager of electrical and facilities.
